I will try to ask my ex company Iris. Maybe Alex and Ah Chow can further assist you on this one. They work there :) But not sure whether they got sell to individual like you or will it be that cheap?

Re: looking for USB Fingerprint reader

    Hi Eric / scngan,

Well, as far as I know, we at Iris doesn't sell or manufacture any fingerprint readers ..., but I think we have some smart card reader that fits the bill ... lol ;) I do not know of any "low cost" devices that meet scngan's budget. If I am not mistaken, the high cost of fingerprint devices is partly attributed to the license to use the device ... Just a suggestion: have you ever explored the idea of using those integrated fingerprint sensors built into laptops instead? Most laptops have them nowadays ... you just need to figure out the way to access and manipulate the fingerprint data captured by the sensor from your application ... However, I noticed that those built in sensors are somewhat less reliable ....

I think I know a couple of guys who has done FYPs that involve fingerprint biometrics ... I will try to ask them and update this thread.

And finally, here's some quick facts which I want to share ... there are several types of imaging technologies used by fingerprint sensors nowadays. The common ones are thermal and optical. Cheap devices tend to use thermal, and in my opinion, thermal is far less reliable than optical. Laptop sensors are mostly, if not all, thermal.

Thanks for your feedback buddy. Maybe you can speak to your lecturer or university for some help. Since you are a Microsoft Student Ambassador, you can ask Microsoft or your alumni for some help :P They might have contacts with vendors.

My current colleague worked in Sagem before. I will try to ask her to help you too. But not guarantee will be cheap.

Except you can loan the finger print device from Iris or Sagem. Maybe sign a NDA. If you are interested, send me your email address by msn and I will send an email to Iris Management and cc to you. Help you a bit :) But not sure they got such thing lar, like loaning to FYP student for projects.

    Thanks.

Re: looking for USB Fingerprint reader

    Hi,

Is the Microsoft Fingerprint Reader available in malaysia now? It is quite cheap now. Around USD40.  But the problem is most international site doesn't ship to malaysia.

    Wow. New Year's Day post!

I thought there were fingerprint readers here. I think I saw one in PJ Section 14 IT Mall in 2007.
